Your Favorite Writing
For my favorite writing assignment I have selected a novel that I have enjoyed and admired. The novel I have selected is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Paulo Coelho wrote the The Alchemist in 1988 but published the English version in 1993. Harper Collins publishers helped published the English version.
It is a story about a shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland of Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure. The catch is that Santiago doesn’t know what the treasure is but “when you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” (Coelho) Along this journey he meets a gypsy woman, a man that calls himself a king and an alchemist. They all point him in the direction of the treasure. Reaching the treasure requires him leaving behind familiar surroundings and working hard. It also requires him to follow his dream and never give up on looking for his dream to find the treasure. Over the course of the journey Santiago realizes that the treasure doesn’t consist of gold and the treasure is found from within him. The treasure consists of all the life lessons he has learned over the course of this travels.
The Alchemist became one of my favorite books because it really changed the way I viewed life. It showed me that one needed to have dedication and the quality of being committed to a purpose. Having that commitment would allow one to search for their treasure and follow their dreams. It proved that life is a journey and one is always looking for that treasure but that treasure can only be found when one finds their inner self.
